Cartoons without words

Ten drawings by the famous Ukrainian old master of the political cartoon: Vladimir Kazanevsky

Vladimir Kazanevsky’s speciality is caricatures without words that make fun of the social and political upheavals of his native country Ukraine in a mordant, poetic and profound way. The cartoons shown here were made over the last ten years, many as a result of the impression made by the Orange Revolution in 2004. "That was a difficult time for us", Kazanevsky recalls in an email to the editorial office of "Report“.
Vladimir Kazanevsky was born in 1950 and grew up in the town of Lebedin (today in Ukraine). In 1973 he completed his first degree in cosmic radiation physics at the State University of Charkov. He worked for ten years in this profession until he changed to the subject "journalism", which he completed in 1984 as what was called an "editorial cartoonist".
Since then Vladimir Kazanevsky has devoted himself with great success to his consuming passion: the cartoon. His drawings are known not only in Europe but also in America, Russia, Iran, Turkey, China, Japan and Korea, countries where he has won more than 200 prizes. His drawings are regularly published in magazines such as "Nebelspalter" (Switzerland), "Eulenspiegel" (Germany), "Yomiuri Shimbun" (Japan) and "Witty World" (USA). His pictures have been exhibited in more than 50 different countries.
In addition to his numerous theoretical publications his first novel ("The Cleansing") was published in 2005 in Russian. Vladimir Kazanevsky works in Kiev, he is married and is the father of two grown-up sons.

Book tip: Vladimir Kazanevsky’s picture book "Homo Gibber. Roman ohne Worte – a Novel without Words" has been recently published by Daedalos Verlag (Basel 2007).

Petrified Psychograms

Anyone who has ever travelled in the Balkans, and in particular in Albania, is familiar with the following typical picture of the landscape: the unfinished carcasses and windowless shells of buildings lying in the open fields as if they had fallen from the sky, without any relation to the topography. Anonymous architecture that seems to proclaim, almost defiantly, a new beginning after the end of the country’s Communist dictatorship.
