Award for Young Composers

A tip for young musicians

The composition award of Erste Bank Group represents a contribution to the support of young composers. Since 1989 this prize, worth 10,000 Euro, has been awarded by a specialist jury under chairman Lothar Knessl to talented, young Austrian composers. Previous prize-winners include some of the most highly regarded talents in the young music scene in Austria (Herbert Willi, Georg Friedrich Haas, Olga Neuwirth and many others). Through collaboration with the “Klangforum Wien” and “wien modern” the possibility is also offered of having the prize-winning composition performed on several occasions. The work will be also published under the label „Kairos“. This year's winner is the composer Wolfram Schurig, who was born in 1967 and lives in Feldkirch, and who has been the director of the “bludenzer tage zeitgemäßer musik” since 1995. His composition “Ultima Thule für fünf Ensembles” will be premiered on 11 November 2004 in the Konzerthaus in Vienna. (al)
