Good Morning, East Europe!EU XXL film on tourIn recent years more and more films from the former East Block countries have been shown at international film festivals and many of them have won awards and prizes. Films such as “Želary” (CZ), “Szep Napok” (HU) or the Emir Kusturica films not only bridge an economically difficult period in the Eastern European art film scene but also establish the necessary contacts beyond national borders. To widen these contacts and extend them throughout Europe former Member of the European Parliament, Mercedes Echerer, established the film series “EU XXL film” last November. Since then this show with selected European films from the areas of shorts, documentaries and animation films has toured through Austria's neighbouring countries. Parallel to this the enterprise “EU XXL film” concentrates on strengthening contacts between filmmakers, producers, distribution companies and sources of grants. More and more production companies and film festivals are joining forces because the financial situation in the former communist countries is still so weak. In addition “EU XXL” film wants to help by means of "interpersonal" networking. The Viennese film director Doris Kittler, who showed her film “Leichte Winter” (2003) at the Bratislava Film Festival last year says:" I was simply asked in writing if I wanted to take part. In the new EU member countries you notice a great feeling of change and commitment that is a source of joy and serves to link us." And which could, perhaps, allow new alliances and films to be made.
