CFA - An International Fashion Project

Five renowned European fashion institutions join forces to establish a unique information network, which detects and presents current positions and developments in fashion design. This information network consists of an Internet platform with a digital archive and local documentation centres located at the different institutions of the partners in question.

Fashion is worn identity. Archiving it is thus a way to capture the spirit of an era, to create fashion memory. The CFA – Contemporary Fashion Archive represents the attempt on the part of Unit F büro für mode in conjunction with Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the Dutch Fashion Foundation, the Flanders Fashion Institute / MoMu and the University of Applied Sciences Pforzheim to accomplish just that, to document the many facets of fashion and its realization in structures and images. Over the years – online launch was in June 2004 – material from a total of 75 fashion and accessories designers, 169 institutions, 28 magazines, 143 exhibitions and 72 creatives from the interface of fashion has been collected. To keep the archive vital, the spectrum is continuously updated and expanded. In addition, a newsletter will now be published five times a year, edited in turn by each of the five partner institutions, in order to keep the public informed of the latest news at CFA as well as recent developments on the partner institutions’ vibrant fashion scene.
